Tom, Dick & Harry staffers spend an inordinate amount of time debating the intricacies of America’s pastime when we should be working. But to quote James Earl Jones’ character in Field of Dreams: “The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball… Oh, people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.” So when Baseball Digest hired us to re-launch the venerable publication to a new era of fans, we slapped on some eye-black and dove in headfirst. The mission was to promote a new editorial feature—scouting reports of prospects from real big league scouts. Now readers can follow the next generation of stars as they’re coming up through the ranks. We asked ourselves what it must be like for scouts to actually witness such talent at a young age. Who’s the “man child” that’s tearing it up in in the bush leagues, and making scouts drool over their radar guns? To dramatize the phenomenon we placed an over-grown beast in a Little League game. Certainly not fair, but funny. The web site and video are getting the word out virally to fans everywhere. Subscriptions will come Ray. They will most definitely come.
