Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner recently passed a bill that allows patients to replace their prescription opioids with cannabis. The day after the bill was signed, we placed a vending machine stocked with pill bottles and information about the legislation outside the State of Illinois Building. We also created a series of “NObituaries” that celebrate patients who’ve already embraced the choice. It was all in support of CRESCOlabs Opioid Prescription Exchange (COPE), a program we designed to spread the good word. CRESCOlabs is a medical cannabis company on a mission: to provide people in pain with an alternative. Because choosing between suffering and potential overdose isn't much of a choice at all. This guerrilla campaign let the world know that Illinois has taken a major step toward the future of medicine. With a little luck, other states in the throes of the opioid epidemic will look at us and see that the grass really is greener.
